Why acquiring new skills is a MUST!

We live in a world that changes constantly and rapidly evolves towards a technologically driven space. Therefore, individuals mustn’t relent in obtaining skills and garnering relevant knowledge. The current revolution in global economies has a connection with technological advancements. This, in turn, has an impact on home life, workplace, education, and so on. To adapt to this fleeting change, students, graduates, job seekers, self-employed, employed, and so on, need to possess dexterity and mastery in certain fields.

There are enormous benefits that individuals stand to enjoy upon acquisition of life skills. Several people can increase their career goals to make room for new skills. Before we discuss these benefits, we will like to explain what life skills are. We’ll also look at reasons why new skills should be gotten and applied in this present day.

What Are Life Skills?

Any skill that is considered useful and can help one make the most out of life, can be considered a life skill. Life skills are skills that are required in dealing effectively with problems and challenges facing humanity and society at large. Therefore, examples of life skills can be: learning to drive a car; learning a new language, and so on. For this article, we’ll only be sharing life skills that are crucial and relevant to personal development and work environment.

Types of Life Skills

As earlier stated, only life skills that are more helpful to individuals and society will be reviewed. While it is good to obtain certificates and degrees, it is also pertinent that we strive to achieve more. To fit into the environment beyond the four walls of a school, one has to understand the requirements to be a part of a different sphere. These requirements are listed below:

  1. Personal Skills: These are life skills that are essential for individuals to constantly remain in check. It provides an individual with a healthy body and mind while attending to life affairs and relating with other individuals. Some examples of these skills include;
    1. Anger management
    2. Stress management
    3. Healthy eating habit
    4. Self -motivation
    5. Proper personal hygiene
    6. Exercise
  2. Learnability: According to Alvin Toffler, the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn. Learnability skill is considered as one of the most important skills because we are in an environment that births emerging trends every day while the existing ones fade. Current information and skills will always be required to solve new problems. Mundane and antiquated solutions can never be useful for present economic bottlenecks. Some examples of the learnability skill include:
    1. Adaptability
    2. Research enthusiasm
  3. Communication Skills: An upward movement in your career is not only dependent on what you do or how effective you are in producing results. It is also dependent on your ability to express yourself both in writing and verbally. This is centered around one’s ability to effectively share thoughts and ideas. It is also concerned with persuasively selling products and services.
  4. Creativity: This is a very crucial skill today as it revolves around human inventions and business successes. Employers look out for proactive and productive minds that can see beyond the present. Creatives are curious individuals who provide real-time solutions to problems.
  5. Problem-solving Skills: This skill has to do with the ability to identify problems, analyze problems, and provide relevant solutions to fix these problems. A problem solver is one who is objective and wants to know the root of a problem.
  6. Leadership skills: The ability to effectively manage a team is a plus mark seeing that the need to build the right working culture in present-day organizations cannot be overemphasized. So, it is important to have the skills to empower and motivate others around you to do their best. Some examples of leadership skills include:
    1. Planning
    2. Organization
    3. Teamwork
    4. Decision-making
  7. Resilience: Setbacks are a part of life certainly bound to happen at a point in life, career, and partnerships. Resilience is the ability to stay confident and never lose focus regardless of downfalls and disappointments.
  8. Technology: To be different, you need to acquire digital and soft skills. Examples of digital skills include:
    1. Search engine marketing
    2. Content marketing
    3. Analytics
    4. Creating and designing websites
    5. Branding
    6. Social media management
    7. Affiliate marketing
    8. Coding
  9. Negotiation: The ability to close deals on good profits is also necessary for this 21st century.
  10. Connection: While one may have all the skills and abilities, one may be frustrated because of a lack of access to the right people and a valid source of information. Remember, no man is an island, and your net worth is your network.


Why You Need to Acquire a Skill

  • Employers look to hire employees who are advanced in knowledge and skills.
  • It improves your ability to work well within a team.
  • You learn to adjust to the business environment.
  • It helps you learn to take responsibility instead of playing blame games.
  • It provides you with new ways to create solutions.

It is not only enough to have a skill, it is more important to constantly upgrade your skillset and venture into other fields. This enables you to stay ahead and remain every employer’s desire. The solution that has ever been to all human problems is to learn a new skill. An additional tip is to create a professional resume and cover letters.
